CARE is an innate human quality. It must be more than theory, it must be practiced. It means something different to everyone, so care begins by asking questions and considering the needs of others. Care is making space for folks to heal. Care is giving more than taking. Care is how you direct your energy, thoughts, prayers. Care is how you show up. Care is a commitment. Care requires trying new things. Care is measured in lives saved, artists empowered, works made. Care is deeply personal to each person cared for, and doing the caring. Caring can start with one, but always ripples out further and wider into communities.
IN CONTEXT: Care has long been community centered. It was once standard practice in most traditional societies, and even in our recent past. Seemingly hopeless news cycles and current events call for an increase in care, which can land you in trouble at times, or grow into a call loud enough to be heard and addressed at others. It’s not that we have to care, it’s that we get to care. Remember all the ways to care that you can.
IN PRACTICE: Quiet cares through a holistic intake process that supports the organization in caring for an artist’s most intimate needs. Quiet’s well- being support efforts have, at times, looked like providing universal artist incomes and covering artist care costs, and at other times, opening their HQ doors and making online community spaces for connections. Each practice is about supporting people over projects. None of this is new, so don’t over-complicate it. No need to run from problems – they open doors to new pathways of being.

How does a community of artists shift culture?
To shift a culture dominated by financial, political, and social power inaccessible by many, we need a new medium of exchange that cannot be owned by individuals. A currency that expands by giving. We call it cultural currency. It is a currency that disrupts and transforms by elevating consciousness and building community.
Cultural currency allows us to find abundance where others see scarcity, to grow in the face of financial limitations. This is a creative antidote to the social, political, and humanitarian challenges of our time.
