Catalyst is the flight that the runway facilitates. It is the ripple through art worlds and culture. It is the impact. Money is the catalyst we all know, creating the time and space required to catalyze works and careers. Quiet has experimented with different ways of using money, and found the best path to impact is to catalyze ways alongside works, so that the catalyzed become the catalysts.
IN CONTEXT: Behind it, is the rich culture of abolition, the collaborative project of working not only to free oneself, but everyone else along the way. As the Civil Rights movement showed us, while the work is to liberate all, it only takes a small minority to lead the way, build the runway, and hold the door open. It’s happened many times before, when the movement of some, became a Movement with a capital M.
IN PRACTICE: Quiet has experimented with different ways of sharing abundance and funding artists and artworks. Creating a multitude of access points to the time and space needed to catalyze careers. It is a culture that begins with the founder, embodying all of the ways. Catalyzing not just works, but the ways that keep catalyzing going, candle to candle. Seeding transformations that start inside the artist, and emanate out. Demonstrating that depth is more important than scale, and that scarcity is only of the mind.

How does a community of artists shift culture?
To shift a culture dominated by financial, political, and social power inaccessible by many, we need a new medium of exchange that cannot be owned by individuals. A currency that expands by giving. We call it cultural currency. It is a currency that disrupts and transforms by elevating consciousness and building community.
Cultural currency allows us to find abundance where others see scarcity, to grow in the face of financial limitations. This is a creative antidote to the social, political, and humanitarian challenges of our time.
Throughout our learning journey, we found that there are five core cultural currencies that Quiet exchanges within our community and that continue to ripple outward:

Care is making space for folks to heal. Care is giving more than taking. Care is how you direct your energy, thoughts, prayers. Care is how you show up.
